Namaste, everyone! My name is Srija, and I am an Indian classical dancer of Chinese origin. Today, I’m reaching out for your support to help fund my upcoming dance production. This project aims to celebrate and strengthen the cultural ties between India and China by exploring their shared heritage through the lens of Buddhism.
Our journey begins with the Mogao Caves, located along the Silk Road in western China. The historic cave of Mogao in the city of Dunhuang serve as a testament to the artistic and spiritual exchange that flourished between the two cultures. I’ll also share the story of the Chinese monk Xuanzang, who traveled to Nalanda University in present-day Bihar, India. Xuanzang’s journey brought Buddhist sutras from india to China, inspiring the stunning cave mural paintings of the Mogao Cave, which later influenced the creation of the Dunhuang dance.
To bring this story to life, we’ll weave together three styles of dance: two forms of Indian classical dance and one form of Chinese classical dance. Through these movements, we’ll explore the artistic and cultural connections between the two traditions, while narrating this incredible history.
I believe this project is the first of its kind to highlight the connections between India and China through Buddhism and the shared elements of our classical dance forms. Your generosity will play a vital role in making this vision a reality.
Thank you for your support and for joining me in celebrating the beauty of our shared heritage!
